Preparing Your Soil

Radishes thrive in loose, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Work compost or aged manure into your garden bed at least 2 weeks before planting to improve soil structure and nutrient content. Aim for a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Remove rocks and break up compacted soilβ€”radishes need space to develop straight, unblemished roots. If your soil tends to retain moisture, add sand or perlite to improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Direct Sowing Seeds

Radishes prefer direct sowing over transplanting. Plant seeds directly into prepared soil about half an inch deep, spacing them 1 to 2 inches apart in rows. Keep rows about 6 inches apart for easier weeding and harvesting. Water gently after planting to settle the soil without creating a crust. In warm climates, plant in spring or fall; in cooler regions, spring planting works best once the soil is workable.

Watering and Maintenance

Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply once or twice weekly, depending on rainfall and temperature. Inconsistent watering causes radishes to split or become pithy. Thin seedlings when they're about an inch tall, leaving the strongest plants spaced according to variety size. Remove weeds regularly to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture.

Harvesting at Peak Ripeness

Spring radishes are ready to harvest in 3 to 4 weeksβ€”pull them when they reach about an inch in diameter for the best flavor and texture. Larger radishes often become woody and bitter. Check soil moisture before harvesting; slightly moist soil makes pulling easier. Winter varieties need 50 to 70 days and can be left in the ground longer or stored in cool conditions for extended use.
